Non Functional, RPI 4 4GB, UNV NVR.

Hi all,

I have done everything to a tee and Monocle gateway is installed and running on my RPI.
It is a 4GB 32bit version.
I have a UNV or Uniview NVR and cameras. 443 is not being used and its a fresh install.

I have everything configured as per the guides and am not having any joy of any capacity. It appears the Alexa has 3 attempts to connect and fails on each one.

It works via VLC with 2 user accounts.
No joy with DIGEST and basic auth.
For some weird reason the logs provided by my install end there and just repeat. Nothing further than that…
I have an Alexa show 5 and I am in NZ.

Lets hope I didn’t just throw $200 down the drain!

I put resolution up to 1920x1080P and then changed @tunnel to @proxy. Still nada…

I read this page here: https://forum.monoclecam.com/topic/201/echo-show-5-2019
It suggest the Alexa doesn’t like anything on any port other than 443? Do I need to log into my NVR and change the RTSP port from 554 to 443? Which is the HTTPS port mind you… Doesn’take things very clear at all sorry. The FAQ is a wild goose chase suggesting to try every setting and if it doesnt work post here…
Any help would be appreciated!

This time I tried changing my NVR port to 443, changed the URL and still dead nothing.

VLC works fine… So does my LG TV…

I applied the tag @proxy-tcp and it now functions! I had to tell it to open the feed 3 times in a row before it started working seamlessly… If Pi reboots need to ask it multiple times in a row to get it to work again but then works after that…

This is from me trying to open the feed twice, first time it said the camera is not responding. Same for the second attempt.
I have tried other tags and they did not work, i have intermittient success with the @proxy-tcp tag. Now it won’t open at all.

Any help is appreciated!

Based on these logs, it really appears to be a networking related issue. Although I’m surprised to hear it worked at all a few times. Basically in the logs, we expect to see some TCP/RTSP connection messages coming from the Alexa devices each time you make a request to Alexa for a camera stream. Immediately after the “INITIALIZE RTSP STREAM” blocks.

Based on the logs, you have the gateway installed and working. It has a valid Monocle access token. Your Amazon/Alexa account is linked properly. We are receiving your request for camera stream from Alexa and the Monocle Gateway is connected and getting notified of the camera requests. The missing step and the next step in the sequence is the Alexa (Echo Show) device establishing a TCP/RTSP socket connection to the Monocle Gateway for each and every camera request. We don’t see this at all in the log data.

This is not the exact model, but it does have users asking about disabling DNS REBINDING on a Vodafone router: https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Other-broadband-queries/THG3000-Are-there-any-more-advanced-settings-need-to-disable-DNS/td-p/2649563

Some routers only have the option to disable DNS rebinding and some allow you to create explicit exceptions so that only DNS hosts that you define are permitted. And sadly some routers don’t offer any options to disable DNS rebinding.

Hi Robert, Thank you forlooking into this. I saw your post in the other thread and also replied there.
I moved my DNS to PiHole and disabled the “DNS Proxy” option in my router settings. Added an exception for the Alexa device on both its WiFi IP’s and made them static. In PiHole there is an option now to create groups. Once I placed the Alexa device’s 2 IP’s (2.4G and 5G) in a group and “Disabled” that group, rebooted Alexa and we were away…

Well … if you can get the 10" on sale, it is the better device. We use the 10" in our kitchen on a daily basis often using it to view camera feeds of the kids rooms (via Monocle). The Show 8 has the 1080P resolution limitation and does feel a bit slower. With that said, none of the Alexa device offer a “perfect” experience. I would say test out the 10" within the Amazon return window and make sure you are happy with it :-)

Did you notice a drop in latency with the 8 or 10? I observe about 12-13 seconds of latency from real-time.

In my experience the latency seems to be camera dependent. Some cameras I am using have a 10-15 second latency and other have a 5-10 second latency.

There may be a slight latency difference were the 10" may edge out the 8", but it may be only a second or two. Certainly not a dramatic improvement/difference.

I believe the latency has more to do with the limited processing power and H264 decoding capabilities of these devices. I see similar latencies when viewing my camera feeds from a Raspberry Pi.
