Echo Show 8
-
I see a few posts regarding Echo Show 8 and where some have it working. I am not finding any solid leads in the forums or any specific mention from Monocle. It is not currently listed under the supported devices page. Anyone know the particulars on why it isn’t on the supported list and if there is something different to make it work? I am using the gateway and it works on my Gen1 Show but never works on my Show 8. I see similar posts but nothing leading to answers. It seems some have it working and some are in the same situation. What are you doing differently? Thank you

I did not have it on the supported list for a while because it took me a while to get one. Now that I have it and have tested with it, I need to add it to the website.
It does have the same limitation as the Echo Show 5. You must use the Monocle Gateway software and It will only render camera streams of 1080P or less. So if your camera stream is higher, you will need to modify the resolution on the camera itself or use a secondary lower resolution stream (if the camera supports multiple streams). Thanks, Robert

@Monocle Thank you, I am sure this is the case then. I need to spend more time on it but a quick check shows that my camera allows 2 sub-streams but neither appear to go down to 1080P. This seems odd but I don’t have time just now to look deeper. If the Show 8 is updated to allow H265 would this change the 1080P requirement? Also odd that my shiny new Echo Show 8 has a lower resolution than my original now ancient 1st gen Show.

It’s possible, but that is entirely up to Amazon. I for one would love to see them add H.265 support … but I’m not holding my breath. It could be a hardware limitation if they are using hardware decoding capabilities.

I was surprised as well by the 1080P limitation. It’s all up to the Amazon OS system software. On the larger Echo devices, they can handle up to 4K streams and simply scale down for their native screen resolutions. I don’t know if it’s some processing power limitation on the Echo Show 5 and 8 devices or if they just imposed some arbitrary limit for no good reason. It is a bummer and pretty sad.
