I have seen this before, My case was due to audio and video settings… I have found strange issues with the cube not liking 4k video and/or audio other than g.711mu… I tried so hard to get all of my cameras to show on firetv and echo’s using my stream #1 4k output… I ended up setting up stream #2 on all of my cameras and set them to 1920x1080 HD ouput with g.711mu on the audio out of the camera, then @noaudio and @proxy using the gateway. My NVR still uses the 4k stream #1. At this resolution the cameras are all stable on firetv and echo’s (including the cube), i can start the video and leave it for a long time, no buffering or cut-out issues.

I can confirm I have also conducted limited testing with this H.264 encoder device and it worked for me too.

I’d like to point out that the use cases for snapshots (ie a single image) are much broader than have been listed here.
One case is time-lapse, where you simply want to automate a photo every minute/hour/day/whatever.

Another is in automations that involve something “dangerous” where you want to validate that the automation fully completed. For example if you have a recirculator pump, you want to switch that on for a few minutes before showering, but you don’t want it running 24/7 (because it puts a strain on copper joints and leads to micro leaks in the plumbing). So you’d want any automation to do something like

start power (eg switch on a smart plug) delay five min stop power capture a screenshot of the smart plug and/or recirculator, and display it on eg an Echo Show.

Video is a sub-optimal solution here insofar as

it’s not necessary you don’t want to have to manually tell the video to stop. Much better to just throw up a snapshot and have it sitting on the Echo Show indefinitely, until you see it and use the Show for some other purpose.

There is no current method for Monocle Gateway to run as a service on Android.
I’m sure it could be made to work, but there are expansion plans that may be limiting on Android as a platform. There are also some compiled binaries that would need to be thoroughly tested and vetted on Android. We will consider this platform, but you may be better off using a Raspberry Pi or similar embedded system running a pure Linux distro for the time being.

I got it working last year with my QNAP + LaView NVR (Hikvision rebrand) + Echo Show 5 / Fire TV stick.
I have attached pics of a document I just created based on memory.
Hopefully I am not missing too much and it will help with your setup.
I cant remember if I had to change some settings on the cameras themselves.
This uses the Docker method.

Hmm. Well I tried accessing my Amcrest camera through the Blue Iris RTSP stream in the same way. The resolution for that one is already supported, but still no success. It seems this issue won’t be resolved by adding the missing resolution, although maybe it’s still one part of the solution. Maybe I should have posted to support instead of feature requests.

I can watch stream directly from my camera Ubiquiti using built in browser. But Alexa cannot. So it means that there is possibility but something should be corrected.

Cool idea.

I am sure any device camera so long as it can send a url would work.
