I believe the only way would be to configure your camera stream for a different resolution/aspect ratio – one that better matches the Alexa device/FireTV.
Using FireTV devices on my HD TVs results in a default aspect ratio of 16x9. So if I configured my camera stream (via the camera settings on the camera – not via monocle) to use a resolution of 1080P (1920*1080) I get a full screen view of the camera with no black bars.

Basically, the Echo Show 5 & 8 now require using the Monocle Gateway software whereas the older original Echo Show and Echo Spot did not.

Let me know if you come up with a successful FFMPEG solution. The last time I tried testing this, the re-encoding created too much latency for a solution where someone wished to view a live camera stream.

For my cameras, I simply configured the primary streams to output 1080P instead of higher 2K or 4K streams.

Thanks for pointing this out. The Echo Show 5 should work for most cameras when using the Monocle Gateway. Wansview cameras seem to be problematic however, they work on older Echo Show devices, but not the latest 5" and 8" models. Good to know that accessing their streams through the Synology NVR software/platform will allow them to work with Alexa devices. I’ll have to play with that setup here as well.

I do have firewall rules on my router that prevent the camera from communicating outside my LAN. Would that prevent the data stream connection to the Echo Show in any way?

No, the IP camera should not be exposed outside of your local network.

However, both the Alexa device and IP camera must be on the same internal network and be able to communicate with each other. If they are on separate VLANS or on a “Guest” WiFi network, this could cause an issue.

Thank you for the information, would say perfect timing as I’ve just purchased a PI4. Will be setting up gateway service to run on this alongside Pihole and vpn.
Again, many thanks and hopefully Alexa device will now play ball and I can concentrate on getting actual IE geek camera to work.

I also have a SD17W IP Camera, and I would be interested to know what is your setting for viewing on Echo Show.
